| Latvijas Kinologiska Federacija celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2005. This cynological organization has survived a complicated process of formation, development, crises and transformations. Before 1970th, there were two organizations in Latvia, which worked in the field of organized cynology. Those were The Society of Hunters and Fishermen and the Service Cynology Club DOSAAF (Voluntary Society of Assistance to the Army, the Air Force and the Navy). There were not many dog breeds in the country at the time – for the most part, there were classical hunting dogs and service dogs. Club officials did not approve import of new breeds. At that time, it was usual to see Bolognezes, Toy Terriers, and Spitzs in the streets of Riga. However, most of those dogs had no pedigrees. Those who had pedigrees for dogs of these breeds were members of the Latvian Society of Hunters and Fishermen. The organization took care of hunting breeds; toy and companion breeds were interesting for them from the financial point of view only. |

Dina Korna and inhabitants of her famous kennel Scandyline live in a small pretty town Kilingi-Nomme, not far from Parnu. When we drove up to the house, we were met by the sonorous barking of Papillons and Shelties, led by a stately Riezenschnauzer bitch named Horsa. The owner of the kennel appeared in the doorway, the dogs understood that everything was all right and calmed down. We were drinking tea near a wonderful pine forest; the weather was sunny and just marvellous. Dina told us how her love to dogs started and how her kennel, Scandyline, was born. |

| Junior Handling. |
Irina Beinarovich, cynologist.
Collage by Yolanta Beinarovich. |
«Junior handlers’ competitions are a possibility for children, interested in dogs, or for young cynologists to prepare for further participation in dog shows. These competitions give them possibility to study and to master different breeds handling in the ring, as if participating in friendly sports competitions. To demonstrate a dog, one needs to know the standard of the breed, as well as to be responsible and to penetrate into the very essence of the matter. Moreover, this kind of competitions helps young people become more generous, more disciplined and tactful; they learn to lose and to accept progress of others».
After Elke Peper, junior handling expert. |

| Sport with Dogs – Agility and Frisbee. |
Svetlana Vanyushina – a cynologist, Agility instructor, Agility judge.
Photos by Maxim Kreslinsh. |
Agility (syn. quickness, swiftness) is a sport where a dog, directed by its guide, negotiates a number of obstacles.
Agility is a sport for enthusiastic people and lively dogs. The main task in Agility looks simple and clear: to be the fastest to negotiate a number of obstacles laid out on a course. While doing this, the sportsman (guide) directs the dog using voice and body language only. It is forbidden to touch the dog or the obstacles, the dog must not wear a collar. Nobody knows the way the obstacles are placed right up to the beginning of the competitions. The judge allows the sportsmen to get to know the track some minutes before the competitions start. The dog does not get to know the track; it runs for the test at once. The dog must clear about 20 different obstacles successfully (Jumps, See-saw, Tire, Tunnels, Dog walk, Weave poles, A-frame, etc.). If the dog knocks down a bar in a jump or makes other mistakes, it gets penalties, which can stultify the advantage in speed. |

| Disc Dog competitions (Frisbee). |
Vladislava Akimova, Frisbee coach.

More than 50 years ago, Yale College students discovered that empty pie tins from the baker, named Frisbie, could be tossed and caught. People liked the new game, it became popular and with time the tins were replaced by plastic flying discs. Ashley Whippet is considered to be the greatest Frisbee dog ever. On the 4th of August, 1974 Alex Stein jumped the fence at a baseball game in Los-Angeles. He had a couple of Frisbees and an amazing dog named Ashley. They astonished the crowd for eight minutes, but it was stopped as Stein was escorted off the field. However, the seed was planted, dog owners got interested in the new sport. Alex Stein was released on bail thanks to Irv Lander, a businessman, who started to contribute to Dog Frisbee development. Nowadays Lander Cup is a fond dream of every Frisbee player.

On the 3rd of June, despite the rainy weather, show activity was in full swing on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds - the traditional place where all big dog shows are held. We were catching glimpses of familiar faces and dog’s muzzles, photographers were dashing about. Groomers were putting the final touches to the beauty of their dogs; handlers were getting ready to the performance and experts – to do the judging. In a word, the usual show atmosphere.
«Baltic Winner 2006» is one of the biggest dog shows of the Baltic Countries. It is held, in turns, in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. This year Estonia had the honour to hold it and on June 3-4, 2006 the International Dog Show «Baltic Winner'06» took place in Tallinn, on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds.

| Dog Owners’ Memo |
Yelena Tatarskaya, a veterinarian.

| Now you are having a fluffy miracle at home, too. You were examining the breeds, you were full of doubts, you were choosing the puppy – and you have chosen it. Congratulations! The puppy will bring you new troubles and cares, but it is nothing compared to what your dog is going to give you in return. Because nobody is able to love the way the dog does! The dog will love you, no matter healthy or ill you are, rich or poor, wicked or kind – the dog will just love you! The dog does not care who or what you are, the dog just loves you because you are its owner. However, a lot of things are demanded from you – you must feed the dog and take it out for walks at the right time, you must comb and brush it, have all vaccinations done and just play with it for the dog to understand that you love it, too. Today we are going to tell the beginners about the most necessary things for the animal to grow beautiful and healthy. |
